When starlings gather in the thousands to spend the night in the marsh’s reed forests, they dance in huge flocks across the evening sky.
Starlings gather in large flocks to settle down for the night in the marsh’s reed forests. The exact reason is not known. Possibly, the dizzyingly large flocks confuse birds of prey, and when they are in a collective group, it is easier for starlings to keep an eye out for potential dangers. Starlings are typically attacked by the swift sparrowhawk, but also the merlin, hen harrier, marsh harrier, and goshawk can pose a threat. In some cases, the world’s fastest bird, the peregrine falcon, is hunting for an evening meal. It is therefore vital for starlings that they can protect themselves when danger is imminent.
