From when you enter the castle square, take a walk in the beautiful garden or stroll around the amazing halls and rooms inside the castle, you will be part of a history that goes thousand of years back, or maybe even longer.
Learn the story of Møgeltønderhus, the original name of the castle, and how it used to be a bastion of the Danish crown and church, fighting the counts of Holstein. Learn how Schackenborg were built and get to know the 11 generations of the Schack family who lived here, have you ever heard of the silverarm or know who the evil countess is?
In 1978 the castle returned to the royal family of Denmark. His royal highness Prince Joachim lived here with his family until 2014, and the castle is now used as their second home.
Schackenborg castle is placed just before the historical street of Møgeltønder Slotsgade, and we encourage you to take a walk down the street, where you will find the church, which in modern history, has been used for 4 royal events.
Schackenborg Castle
This tour will focus on the castle of Schackenborg, it’s history and significance to the area. Learn the marvels of the national hero Hans Schack who build the castle, of its habitants through the years, the royal family and the national treasures found in the area. Approx. 60-70 minutes.
