The autumn season runs from August to December, with the greatest activity in September and October. Black Sun is typically best experienced from mid-September to mid-October.

With Schackenborg Slotskro as your base, you can easily combine this remarkable experience in the marshlands with an overnight stay in historic surroundings.

Choose an overnight stay with breakfast, or make a little more of your visit with one of our stays where gastronomy also becomes part of the experience. We recommend two nights if you would like plenty of time to enjoy both Schackenborg and the surrounding nature.

For example, enjoy dinner at Slotskroen one evening and spend the next experiencing Black Sun over Tøndermarsken. Or simply let Slotskroen be your base before and after your trip into the marshlands.

Black Sun is a natural phenomenon, and the starlings’ dance can therefore not be guaranteed.

Schackenborg Castle is a royal castle and the place where past meets present. On a guided tour you will be taken on a historical journey about the skilled warlord Hans Schack, the mad countess, the beautiful Otto Didrik and the children's trees in the Castle Garden. See the castle, where the princely couple HRH Prince Joachim and HRH Princess Marie lived until 2014 and now use as their second home. In order to preserve the historic interiors , photography or filming is not permitted inside, and the castle is under video surveillance throughout the visit.

It is the middle section of the castle that is open to visitors. Other parts of Schackenborg Castle function as private residences – including for HRH Prince Joachim and his family when they are staying there.
