Sønderhaven, laid out at the end of the 17th century by Dowager Countess Sophie Dorothea Schack, was originally a baroque garden with clear lines and symmetry. In the 1750s the garden was converted into a French setting with linden avenues and around 1800 conifers were added. Today, a large part of the garden is forest. Previously, the garden was reserved for the Schack family, but since 1970 Tønder Municipality has been responsible for the maintenance, and the garden is now permanently open to the public.
Slotfeltladen – History and culture in a magnificent setting
