When you enter the castle square at Schackenborg Castle, take a walk in the beautiful castle garden or walk around the castle's beautiful halls and rooms, you are walking in footsteps that stretch back a thousand years and perhaps even further.

Hear about the time Møgeltønderhus, as the castle was called from the beginning, was one of the bastions of the Danish crown and church in the fight with the Holstein counts. Also look forward to the many stories about the construction of Schackenborg and the 11 generations of Schack who have lived at Schackenborg Castle - have you, for example, ever heard of the silver arm, or do you know who the evil countess is?

In 1978, the castle returned to the Danish royal family. The princely couple lived in the castle until 2014 and now use it as their second home.

Schackenborg Castle is located before the idyllic Slotsgade in Møgeltønder. Don't miss out on a walk in the beautiful Slotsgade when you visit Schackenborg Castle.

Please note that visits to the castle are not suitable for people with reduced mobility, as there is no lift in the castle and that access to the castle is via the cobbled castle courtyard.

Experience Møgeltønder Church

On this guided tour, you will learn more about the history of the beautiful church, which, like the rest of Møgeltønder, is something very special. It is the city's oldest building and Denmark's longest village church. The church is also unique in having been both a village and a castle church. Among other things, get the story of why the church's organ is unusual, and at the same time enjoy the lavish interior decoration. The duration is 60 min.

The castle garden
Take a walk in the Royal Castle Garden

Until the summer of 2021, the inner garden of Schackenborg Castle could only be admired through the beautiful lattice at the end of the avenue up to the castle.

Now you can take a walk in the garden every day from 10-16 and enjoy the many flowers, bushes and trees. Feel free to take a break on a bench in the garden, feel the peace and the sound of the singing birds.

Schackenborg Foundation

Schackenborg Castle is owned and operated today by the Schackenborg Foundation. The foundation was founded on 30 June 2014 by Prince Joachim, Bitten and Mads Clausens Fond, ECCO Holding A/S and Ole Kirks Fond and has Prince Joachim and Princess Marie as patrons. The foundation is a non-profit, commercial foundation that has taken over Schackenborg Castle and a farm belonging to it with the aim of opening the castle and park to the public, to give the royal family the opportunity for occasional stays at the castle in order to maintain the close contact between the Royal House and Sønder Jutland and, to the extent possible, to support charitable and non-profit purposes.

Royal blood
A castle with royal residents

Prince Joachim has lived permanently at Schackenborg for 21 years, and Schackenborg runs in the prince's blood. He is an expert in Schackenborg's history, which today would be difficult to tell without his knowledge and insight. The prince knows every corner, every portrait, every treasure and all the good stories that lie behind Schackenborg.

In 2014, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and their children chose to move to Copenhagen, and today they live temporarily in Paris, while Prince Joachim completes a 10-month course at the distinguished École Militaire in his capacity as a colonel in the Army. Schackenborg is the family's second home, and Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and their children therefore often visit the castle. Schackenborg is the whole family's sanctuary, and the family has many friends here.

Prince Joachim's four children, like their father, are closely connected to Schackenborg, and the eldest already know every nook and cranny and the stories at Schackenborg.
