Schackenborg Castle is not only the story of a princely couple loved by the people, but also of a family for 11 generations and Denmark's most famous gold find. It is the story of a castle on the border between countries and landscapes with a significance that reaches across the whole kingdom.

Schackenborg consists of Schackenborg Castle, Schackenborg Castle Garden and Castle Park, Schackenborg Castle Inn with associated historic houses with accommodation, including seven suites and surrounding farmland.
The story of the castle
Schackenborg Foundation
Schackenborg Castle is owned and operated today by the Schackenborg Foundation. The foundation was founded on 30 June 2014 by Prince Joachim, Bitten and Mads Clausens Fond, ECCO Holding A/S and Ole Kirks Fond and has Prince Joachim and Princess Marie as patrons. The foundation is a non-profit, commercial foundation that has taken over Schackenborg Castle and a farm belonging to it with the aim of opening the castle and park to the public, to give the royal family the opportunity for occasional stays at the castle in order to maintain the close contact between the Royal House and Sønder Jutland and, to the extent possible, to support charitable and non-profit purposes.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie's second home
Prince Joachim has lived permanently at Schackenborg for 21 years, and Schackenborg runs in the prince's blood. He is an expert in Schackenborg's history, which today would be difficult to tell without his knowledge and insight. The prince knows every corner, every portrait, every treasure and all the good stories behind Schackenborg.
In 2014, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie together with their children decided to move to Copenhagen and live. In 2019, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie moved with their children to Paris, where Prince Joachim began the highest military training in France as part of his long-term commitment to the armed forces. After the end, both the Prince and the Princess were sent to the Danish embassy in Paris as defense attache and special envoy for culture respectively. On 1 September 2023, His Royal Highness Prince Joachim took up a new position in the Ministry of Defense as defense industry attaché at the Danish embassy in Washington DC, where the Prince will contribute to the USA and Canada in the coming years as Denmark's representative for the strengthening of cooperation with the defense industry.
Schackenborg is the family's second home, and therefore Prince Joachim and Princess Marie often visit the castle with their children. Schackenborg is a haven for the whole family, and they have many friends here. Prince Joachim's four children, like their father, have a close connection to Schackenborg, and the eldest already knows every nook and cranny and all the stories about Schackenborg.
