Schackenborg is more than a castle. It is the focal point of a landscape rich in history, lived lives and stories that can still be felt in the present day.
Schackenborg Castle, the castle garden and Schackenborg Castle Inn with its associated historic buildings, along with the surrounding farmland – together they form a place where past and present exist side by side, and where history remains alive.

Schackenborg Castle is not merely the story of a royal couple beloved by the people. It is also the story of a family across 11 generations, of Denmark's most celebrated gold find and of a castle situated on the border between countries, landscapes and eras – between war and peace.

 For centuries, Schackenborg has held a significance that reaches far beyond the streets of Møgeltønder. It has been a place where power, culture, agriculture and royal history intertwine, and where the traces can still be followed to this day.

Take a walk in the castle garden

Every day from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, you can walk the garden's paths, take in a wealth of flowers, shrubs and ancient trees. Find a bench and let the calm settle over you as time slows just a little. Here, there is space to savour the moment. On special occasions Slotshaven may be closed.

The Schackenborg Foundation
Responsibility, openness and rootedness

Schackenborg Castle is today owned and managed by the Schackenborg Foundation. The Foundation was established on 30 June 2014 by Prince Joachim, the Bitten and Mads Clausen Foundation, ECCO Holding A/S and the Ole Kirk Foundation, with Prince Joachim and Princess Marie as patrons.
The Foundation is a non-profit, commercial foundation that has taken over Schackenborg Castle and the associated agricultural estate with the aim of opening the castle and gardens to the public, giving the royal family the opportunity to stay on occasion, and preserving the close connection between the Royal House and South Jutland – as well as supporting charitable and public-benefit causes to the greatest extent possible.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie's second home

Schackenborg Castle and Møgeltønder have for many years held a very special place in the heart of Prince Joachim, who lived at the castle as a permanent resident for 21 years. The Prince's deep knowledge of and passion for the castle's history, rooms, portraits and historical treasures have been of great significance to the way the story of the place is told and shared.

In 2014, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie moved to Copenhagen with their children, and in 2019 moved to Paris, where Prince Joachim completed France's highest level of military education. The couple subsequently became attached to the Danish Embassy in Paris as defence attaché and special cultural envoy respectively.

On 1 September 2023, Prince Joachim took up a new position at the Ministry of Defence as defence industry attaché at the Danish Embassy in Washington D.C., where he represents Denmark in its relations with the United States and Canada.

Schackenborg Castle remains, however, the family's second home. Prince Joachim, Princess Marie and their children visit the castle often, and it serves as a place of refuge – filled with friendships, memories and a deep sense of belonging. The Prince's four children share their father's close connection to Schackenborg Castle, and the eldest in particular knows every corner of the place and many of the stories that go with it.
