Until the summer of 2021, the inner garden of Schackenborg Castle could only be admired through the beautiful lattice at the end of the avenue up to the castle.
Now you can take a walk in the garden every day from 11-16 and enjoy the many flowers, bushes and trees. Feel free to take a break on a bench in the garden, feel the peace and the sound of the singing birds.
The inner castle garden
Already when Schackenborg was built, gardens were laid out within the moat that surrounds the castle. These are the gardens that are today called the inner castle garden.
Schackenborg Palace Garden, like many other gardens, is a garden in perpetual change – it grows and changes constantly, and the facilities have been subject to changing fashion whims since the 17th century.
In the garden you will find, among other things, the trees that Prince Joachim has planted for each of his four princes and princesses.
The outer castle garden
The outer castle garden – popularly called Sønderhaven – was laid out by Countess Sophie Dorothea Schack at the end of the 17th century. The garden was originally a typical baroque garden with clear axis divisions, but over time the garden changed. In the 1750s, it was e.g. transformed into a French facility with large linden avenues, and around 1800 the castle garden was expanded with conifer planting. Many trees were gradually planted, and a large part of the garden is today forest.
For many years, the outer castle garden was also reserved for the Schack family at Schackenborg, but gradually it also became open to the people of Møgeltønder. In 1970, Tønder Municipality was finally able to take over the administration and care of the garden in return for it being permanently open to the public.
A much needed boost
Both the inner and outer castle gardens have since been given a much-needed boost by Prince Joachim. In 2007-2009, Prince Joachim carried out an extensive renovation of the garden, where the paths were restored, half of the trees were removed and many of the old original elements were brought out again.
