The Wadden Sea is home to unique wildlife and birdlife. Every year, 12–15 million migratory birds stop here on the East Atlantic Flyway. Tøndermarsken, Denmark’s largest contiguous meadow area, is a central part of the national park. The park is filled with wonders and knowledge waiting to be discovered.

Oysters in Wadden Sea National Park

Oyster harvesting in the Wadden Sea has historical ties to Schackenborg, dating back to 1662. Today, everyone is free to pick oysters in the cold months from October to April.
It’s a truly special experience to walk out to the oyster beds and taste the fresh, salty delicacies – or take them home and prepare them on the grill. Several local operators offer guided tours where you can learn about nature, safety, and the unique role of oysters in our food culture.

Small towns with big character.
Sønderjylland offers both lively market towns and charming small-town environments. Haderslev, Tønder, Aabenraa, and Sønderborg provide shopping, cafés, and vibrant urban life.
In smaller towns like Møgeltønder, Tønder, and Højer, you’ll find cobblestone streets, old farms, and houses that tell the story of the region’s history. Ribe, Denmark’s oldest town, is just a half-hour drive away.

Sønderjylland’s unique story.
Sønderjylland has a history that leaves its mark. Visit the Dybbøl Banke History Center and experience the story of the 1864 war and see the iconic Dybbøl Mill.
Also, visit Frøslev Camp, built as a German internment camp during World War II. If you want to go even further back in time, you can explore archaeological findings and market town history at the museums in Haderslev.

The marsh trail
Marskstien

Beautiful hiking experiences in flat lands.
Tøndermarsken offers a wealth of hiking opportunities. Try the 54 km long Marskstien trail or one of the 8 shorter loop trails if that suits your pace better. Here, you can forage for wild herbs, spot starlings, curlews, brent geese, and white-tailed eagles, and feel the special tranquillity of the landscape under the vast sky.

Marskstien is certified as a Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe by the European Ramblers Association and passes right by Schackenborg Slotskro.

The trail takes you through Tønder and Møgeltønder, past Slotsgade, Schackenborg, the Røj farmstead, and Slotfeltladen with its unique roof construction. Along the way, you’ll experience dikes, pumping stations, canals, and lakes, as well as the unique dike villages of Rudbøl and Nørremølle.

Cycle at your own pace
As something new, you can rent e-bikes at the reception. We have four e-bikes available, so you can easily explore the area and nature around Schackenborg.

The dance of the Starlings

A natural phenomenon you’ll never forget.
When thousands of starlings gather to roost in the reeds of the marsh, the phenomenon known as Black Sun occurs – a fascinating sight where enormous flocks move in synchrony, creating living patterns against the evening sky.

This phenomenon is believed to protect the starlings from birds of prey such as sparrowhawks, merlins, hen harriers, and – rarely – peregrine falcons. In a large flock, starlings can react more quickly when danger lurks.
